Transports in Naples

Main Public Transportation Lines

Naples’ public transit system provides 3 different metro lines (the 1, 2 and 6), a dozen urban commuter railways, 4 funiculars, 3 tram lines, 3 urban trolleybus lines, over 80 urban bus lines, and multiple suburban and regional bus lines.

For downloadable PDF maps of the public transport system, please visit the UnicoCampania website: http://www.unicocampania.it/

Maps can also be allocated in the tourist office located in the arrivals terminal of Capodichino airport, the Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi train station, Galleria Umberto (located near the San Carlo Opera House) or in Piazza Plebiscito.

From the Garibaldi train station to Piazza Municipio and or Piazza Plebiscito, take the R2 bus in the direction of Corso Umberto. Run times are approximately every 8-12 minutes; please note that this bus line tends to be crowded.

From Piazza Municipio (located near the ferry and cruise ships terminal) to Piazza Garibaldi or Central Station and Centro Direzionale, take the tram line 1 in the direction of Via Marittima and Corso Garibaldi. Run times are approximately every 10 minutes with a travel time of 10 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi, and 20 minutes to Centro Direzionale.

From the Museo Archeologico Nazionale to the Museo di Capodimonte, take the 2M bus.

From Piazza Municipio to the Museo di Capodimonte, take the R4 bus in the direction of Piazza Dante and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

From Piazza Municipio to Cape Posillipo, take the 140 bus in the direction of Chiaia and Mergellina.

The Alibus is a special bus line which stops only at the Capodichino airport, the Garibaldi train station and Piazza Municipio (located across from the Molo Beverello port). Tickets can be bought onboard for 4 euros, or at a tobacconist or newsstand for 3 euros. If you buy your tickets at a tobacconist or newsstand, be sure to validate them using a self-service validating machine.

If you are leaving from the central station, you can also take one of the many suburban bus lines. These bus stops can reached in front of the station or within a few blocks south of the Maritime Station located along the waterfront. You can also take these lines to the Amalfi coast.

If you are heading to Pompeii or Sorrento, use the Circumvesuviana trains which leave from the central station. Please note that these trains depart from a separate downstairs area located in the station.

Currently the Naples metro is under construction as it is expanding its services to the historic district and airport. Due to the enormous wealth of history in the area, this project requires a lot of careful excavation of vestiges and is estimated to take years in order to complete. Presently however, there are two metro lines that depart from Piazza Garibaldi located below the Central Station. Line 1 runs approximately every 8 minutes and stops at University, Municipio, Toledo, Piazza Dante, the National Archeological Museum and up Vomero Hill. Line 2 runs approximately every 12 minutes from the Garibaldi train station towards Pozzuoli, through Piazza Cavour, Montesanto, Mergellina and Fuorigrotta or San Paolo Stadium.

Another means of transport are the funicular lines, of which there are 3 running from the historic center to Vomero Hill and another running from Mergellina to Posillipo Hill. A funicular is an incline railway used to navigate hilly cities such as Naples. Two rail cars are attached at opposite ends of a long cable and they help ascend and descend steep hills. While one rail car is going up the hill, the other rail car is going down the hill, essentially crossing paths in the middle. The following 3 lines, Funicolare di Chiaia, Funicolare di Montesanto and Funicolare Centrale all run from the top of Vomero Hill to various parts of downtown Naples. The fourth line, Funicolare di Posillipo, runs from the Mergellina seaside district to the top of Posillipo Hill. The Montesanto and Posillipo lines are particularly nice as you can enjoy scenic views and breathtaking panoramas of the entire city, all at your leisure!

Other Destinations:
If you are planning on going to Sorrento, Capri, and or Ischia, you can leave from Molo Beverello Maritime Station, and or Piazza Municipio by boat, ferry or hydrofoil. From Mergellina you can take a hydrofoil to Capri and or Ischia. There are various companies and boats that depart every day, approximately every 30 minutes but are subject to seasonal availability. Tickets can be acquired directly from the vendor on the day of travel.

Pozzuoli, Cuma and the volcanic Campi Flegrei sites such as sandy beaches, lakes and other archeological sites can be reached by Cumana, a commuter train. The Cumana leaves from Montesanto approximately every 20 minutes.

All other regional destinations can be reached by train or bus.
