Matera, European capital of culture.

Matera will be the European Capital of Culture 2019.
The news was communicated in these days by Steve Green, President of the international jury of selection consisting of 13 members (six Italians and seven foreigners), the Minister of Heritage and cultural activities and tourism Dario Franceschini.
With seven votes out of 13, Matera was thus officially designated European Capital of Culture for 2019, a title which, in addition to Italy, was also assigned to Plovdiv for Bulgaria.
The European Capital of Culture is an institution founded in 1985 to promote the knowledge of the historical-artistic and cultural heritage of the EU member countries.
The first was the Greek capital Athens, while Italy was represented in the past by Florence in 1986, Bologna in 2000 and Genoa in 2004.
